Design Guide

The Trust and the CouncilThe Trust and Barnet Council exercise control over development on the Suburb in different ways. We have produced this document to ensure that advice given by both bodies is consistent, as are criteria applied to the consideration of any proposals. It should also reduce delays for applicants negotiating with the two bodies. It is in your interest to take the advice on board. The Trust and Council do not wish without good reason to prevent residents from altering their houses. But we want to ensure that changes are in keeping with the spirit of the original design. We recognise that the Suburb is not a museum but a living community. In modernising their homes, residents want larger kitchens and family rooms and often wish to use attic space for additional accommodation. Often this can be done without spoiling the characters of either the individual house or the neighbourhood. There is such a large variety of different houses on the suburb, varying within and between both old and later development, that each application has to be considered individually. The kind of extension, dormer window or loft conversion suitable for one type of house might be completely inappropriate for another. It is impossible to lay down o uniform set of rules for the whole Suburb. |
